Guide On Picking An Accent Piece For Every Room

Putting an end to boring-looking rooms. This piece would teach you what is an "accent piece" and how you can use it to give any room that last thing it's missing to make it truly breathtaking.

Making your space into a place that feels like home goes beyond just the furniture, floor material, and wall color. You need to add character to your house to complete it. One of the best ways to do this, and a crucial step to every rooms completion, is adding an accent piece. An accent piece is that final touch to the room that gives it the character it’s missing.

So let’s start with the basics: what is an accent piece? An accent piece is really any item that doesn't completely mirror the coloring/look of the space but accents it. It can be lighting, wall hangings, art, accessories, or even small furniture.

Think of an accent wall. It’s a completely different color than the walls of the rest of the room, yet it complements the room and adds character. When looking for an accent piece you’re not looking for something that stands out drastically, but you’re looking for something different than the rest of the room that would enhance the room.

So how do you know what accent item to choose?

The first thing you need to evaluate is what aesthetic you are trying to achieve. Are you looking for a mid-century modern edge in a neutral color palette? Or are you wanting to create a rustic farmhouse that is cozy and bright? Before you start a project, figure out what you like and let that determine your choices. This should always be the first thing you do in designing your space, but if space is already finished and you just need something to enhance it, evaluate what style the room is already.

Once you know the direction you are headed aesthetically, it's time to pick your pieces. Picking an accent piece is your time to think outside the box and do something different. In other words,  this your time to have a little fun.

As mentioned earlier, one way to add an accent piece is with a small piece of furniture. For example, our beautiful Clear Ghost Stool/Table is a fun way to play up a room if you are going for more of a glamorous or vibrant look for space. Not only is it another seating option, but it plays off the light and adds more character to your entire room.

If you want to add an accent piece in the form of lighting, a floor lamp is always a good way to add light while filling corners. Floor lamps can come in so many fun variations that there is an option for every style.

If your style is more of a mid-century modern, our Marble Arco Style Floor Lamp is unique and looks amazing when arching over a sofa. Design trends are going more towards overarching floor lamps and we will proudly stand behind that trend.

One of the most obvious ways to add an accent piece is in the form of accessories. This is a broad category, but this is where you can really get creative. Show off something that is meaningful to you or something that you think is interesting. For example, if you have an open shelf, make a vignette of bright vases to add color to a neutral room.

One of our pieces that we love to put in modern spaces is this Basin Magazine Rack. You might not think that a magazine rack would add much to space, but it really adds another layer of design to a room and brings a bright contrasting color into the space. Because something like this magazine rack is a bit more subtle, you can easily have other accent pieces in the room.

Every detail matters and picking out your accent piece is no exception. This is a part of the design that is often overlooked or undervalued. When you leave this step out, you’ll find that it will be harder to really love the final outcome of the room. Picking accents that truly match your style and passions will transform your house into the home you have always dreamed of.
